Amazon France PPC Guide

Amazon France sells in French and prices in euros, and its fulfilment, tax and labelling rules follow EU and French law. Learn what changes when you advertise on amazon.fr.

Marketplace: amazon.fr | Currency: EUR

Marketplace Overview

Amazon France (amazon.fr) sells in French and prices in euros. For a seller arriving from an English-language marketplace, the two changes that matter most are structural rather than commercial. The shopping language is French, so the keyword set has to be rebuilt rather than translated, and the displayed price includes VAT, so the revenue figure in your reports is gross of tax and every margin calculation has to start by netting it out.

France sits inside the EU customs union and the EU VAT system, and that decides how you fulfil. You can serve French customers from stock held in another EU country through the European Fulfilment Network, paying a cross-border fulfilment fee and accepting a longer delivery promise, or you can place stock in France, which shortens the promise but creates a French VAT registration obligation the moment inventory is stored there. Since the UK left the EU customs union, stock held in Britain no longer supplies the EU fulfilment network, so a British seller entering France is making a fresh inventory decision rather than extending an existing one.

France also carries compliance rules of its own. The Toubon law requires French for the labelling, instructions and advertising of goods offered to consumers in France, and the French extended producer responsibility regime requires registration with an approved scheme and a unique identifier for several product families. Amazon collects those identifiers in Seller Central, and listings in the affected categories can be blocked without them. Neither rule is an advertising rule, but both stop a campaign dead if the listing behind it is suppressed, so treat them as launch prerequisites rather than paperwork to file later.

PPC Advertising Tips for Amazon France

1

Rebuild your keywords in French rather than translating them

French builds product names with linking words instead of stacking nouns, so the natural phrasing is housse de couette or machine ร  cafรฉ, with the qualifier after the head noun. Translating an English phrase word for word produces something French shoppers never type. Start from French autocomplete and the wording on French competitor listings, then confirm against your own search term reports, because first-party data wins on any conflict.

2

Cover accented, unaccented and agreed forms

Shoppers type both accented and unaccented spellings of the same word, and French gender and number change the surface form of a single idea, so noir, noire, noirs and noires are four strings for one colour. Give the variants you can prove demand for their own exact targets rather than assuming one broad match sweeps them all, and keep the anglicisms French shoppers genuinely use instead of forcing a French equivalent nobody searches.

3

Set targets from breakeven, not from a headline ACoS

Because amazon.fr prices include VAT, the sales figure you see is gross of tax. Take the price net of VAT, subtract cost of goods and fees, then divide by that net price to get breakeven ACoS, and express every campaign target relative to it. A target carried over unchanged from a marketplace where prices exclude tax will be looser than you think.

4

Plan around the French retail calendar

The soldes are fixed in law, in winter and in summer, with a small number of border and overseas departments on their own dates set by decree. You can still run promotions outside those windows, since what the rules restrict is the use of the word soldes and selling below cost, but the market-wide discount period arrives on known dates rather than dates you choose. August is the main summer holiday month, la rentrรฉe at the start of September restarts several categories at once, and May carries a run of public holidays that shoppers bridge into long weekends.

5

Read hourly performance in a single time zone

Mainland France sits in one time zone, so an hourly curve is not smeared across regional peaks the way it is in a market spanning several. Judge each hour on RPC deviation, which is the hour's revenue per click against the account's overall revenue per click, and apply the result as a bid modifier over untouched base bids. A weak hour deserves a lower bid, never a pause or a budget change, because a budget is binary and controls nothing.

6

Remember placement modifiers compound

A placement modifier multiplies the bid that has already been adjusted, so the two compound rather than replace one another. Set the base bid to the economics of the worst-converting placement, then raise the better placements with modifiers judged on relative conversion rate, never on placement ACoS, which conflates the keyword's bid with the placement's quality.

Challenges

  • -The keyword set has to be built in French from scratch, since translated phrasing rarely matches how shoppers search
  • -Storing stock in France creates a French VAT registration obligation, and UK-held inventory no longer supplies the EU network
  • -Extended producer responsibility registration and French-language labelling gate the listing before any advertising can help it
  • -The 14 July fรชte nationale, the 1 November Toussaint and the May public holidays shift dispatch and delivery patterns around them
  • -Customer messages, reviews and returns arrive in French, so service capacity has to be in place before you scale spend

Opportunities

  • +A listing translated word for word misses natural French phrasing, which leaves keyword ground a French-built set can take
  • +One mainland time zone makes hourly patterns easier to read, so dayparting decisions rest on a cleaner signal
  • +Pan-European FBA spreads one stock pool across several EU countries, so a single inventory decision serves several marketplaces
  • +Pricing in euros removes currency conversion between France and the other euro-area marketplaces you may already run
