Metrics
What is CPC?
Cost Per Click
Cost Per Click - the amount you pay each time someone clicks your ad.
The Formula
CPC = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Clicks
CPC (Cost Per Click) is the amount you pay Amazon each time a shopper clicks on your ad. It's a core metric that directly impacts your advertising profitability.
How CPC Works
Amazon PPC uses an auction system. You set a maximum bid, and Amazon charges you the minimum needed to win the auction (usually slightly above the next-highest bidder).
The Formula
CPC = Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Clicks
Example
If you spent $100 and received 200 clicks:
- CPC = $100 ÷ 200 = $0.50
Factors Affecting CPC
- Competition - More advertisers = higher CPCs
- Keyword relevance - Better relevance = lower CPCs
- Product price - Higher-priced products often have higher CPCs
- Category - Some categories are more competitive
- Seasonality - Q4 typically has higher CPCs
CPC Benchmarks by Category
| Category | Average CPC |
|---|---|
| Electronics | $0.75 - $1.50 |
| Home & Kitchen | $0.50 - $1.00 |
| Beauty | $0.60 - $1.20 |
| Toys | $0.40 - $0.90 |
| Grocery | $0.30 - $0.70 |
How to Lower CPC
- Improve listing quality - Better relevance scores reduce costs
- Use long-tail keywords - Less competition, lower CPCs
- Optimize bids strategically - Don't overbid for your margins
- Add negative keywords - Reduce wasted spend on irrelevant clicks
Examples
- →$50 spend ÷ 100 clicks = $0.50 CPC
- →$200 spend ÷ 250 clicks = $0.80 CPC
