Targeting

What is Category Targeting?

Amazon Category Targeting

Targeting a browse category, optionally refined by brand, price, rating or Prime, instead of naming ASINs.

Category targeting buys placement across a whole browse category rather than against a named list of products. One target line can make your ad eligible against a very large number of ASINs, which makes it the widest form of product side targeting and the one that most needs constraints.

Refinements are the control

An unrefined category target is close to untargeted. Amazon lets you narrow it, and the refinements are where the strategy lives:

RefinementWhat it selects for
BrandContest specific brands, or exclude your own
Price rangeAppear against products your price argument beats
Star ratingAppear against products your reviews beat
Prime shippingMatch or avoid a delivery promise

A refined category target is a hypothesis stated in filters. Products in this category, under this price, below this rating, are ones my listing wins against. That is a testable claim. An unrefined one is not.

The discovery to promotion loop

Category targeting is best treated as the product side equivalent of an auto campaign. It is a wide net whose purpose is to tell you which specific ASINs convert, so that those ASINs can be promoted to individual product targets with their own bids.

  1. Run the category target at a modest bid.
  2. Read the report, which shows the individual ASIN your ad served against.
  3. Promote the converting ASINs into a product targeting campaign.
  4. Exclude the ASINs and brands that spend without converting.

There is no negative category, so exclusion happens at ASIN and brand level. That asymmetry is the main operational difference from keyword work.

Worked example

Suppose you sell a mid-priced kitchen item and set a category target refined to products priced above yours and rated below yours. Over a month the report shows most of the spend concentrated in a handful of ASINs and the orders concentrated in three of them. Those three become explicit product targets at their own bids, the heaviest spending non-converters become negatives, and the category line continues at a lower bid as a discovery channel.

Reading the numbers

A category target aggregates many different products, so its blended ACoS describes no single competitive situation. Judge it the way you judge a broad keyword: the line tells you whether the net is worth keeping, and the report beneath it tells you what to do next. In Shurq's ad manager, category rows are classified separately from ASIN targets and auto clauses, so the two are never averaged together in a segment view.

Examples

  • Refining a category target to products priced above yours and rated below yours
  • Promoting the converting ASINs out of a category target into their own product targets
  • Excluding a brand inside a category rather than abandoning the category
